Why not Tomatis?

WHY OUR CENTERS DO NOT USE THE TOMATIS METHOD

We were the first in Ukraine to work with the Tomatis method 21 years ago, when nobody had yet heard of it, and after six months of work we gave it up: it CANNOT COPE with severe impairment of speech and intelligence. And how can the perception of speech be restored by music, when the speech areas themselves are formed by speech, by voice stimulation? Sadly, about 20 per cent of the mothers who come to us have already been through Tomatis therapy with no result - and that, in fact, is their reason for coming to us. Because we know how to work with non-verbal children.

The programs of High-Frequency Therapy were built not on Tomatis but on neurological knowledge of HOW THE SPEECH AREAS FORM in children in the womb. Because the areas are formed by speech, and the child hears it through the bones of the skull, using VOICE stimulation and special BONE CONDUCTION HEADPHONES makes it possible to restore the perception of speech - and with it all speech and intellectual activity - in almost any non-verbal child. Which is what we do, successfully, in our Speech Restoration Centers.

But the latest Russian study of the Tomatis method greatly surprised and disappointed not only the great many people who pin their hopes on the method, but the top-level consultants themselves. But first things first.

Two years ago a top-level Tomatis consultant approached the Education Committee of the St Petersburg city government with the aim of running a study that would prove the method effective. Four groups of children with intellectual and speech impairment were formed

1. Tomatis plus sessions with a speech pathologist

2. Sessions with a speech pathologist only

3. Simply listened to classical music

4. Simply listened to classical music for six months, and after six months took 2 more sessions of Tomatis, to compare how the same children developed with nothing and with the method.

The results so disappointed the researchers that they drew a delicately worded conclusion (quoted here; the full study can be seen below):

THAT IS ALL. And that is the entire conclusion of a year-long serious study.

If you look carefully at the charts, you can see that sessions with a speech pathologist and ordinary school lessons improve children's mental processes almost as much as using the method does. This sad fact confirms once again that for the restoration of children with severe delays in general and speech development other, better methods must be used, plus steady work with speech therapists and speech pathologists, to reach the maximum result.
