MICROPOLARIZATION 

MICROPOLARIZATION is a highly effective method of restoring children with developmental delays, based on stimulating the cells of the brain with a weak direct current. The current is comparable to the natural biopotentials of the neurons, which makes it possible to use the method even with babies practically as a physiotherapy procedure.

The method itself was developed by the Institute of Medical Rehabilitation "Vozvrashchenie" (St Petersburg), which has been researching this field for more than 25 years.

What are we going to stimulate, and why?

  I was the first in Ukraine to give micropolarization sessions on individual protocols - SCHEMES OF STIMULATION WRITTEN STRICTLY FOR THE CHILD - both to the head, and to the back, and even to the arms and legs with certain kinds of damage. My education - in defectology (specialising in pathopsychodiagnostics) and in medicine (specialising in child neurology) - together with 32years of experience makes it possible at the consultation to determine the areas for stimulation as accurately as possible and to write a scheme for each child, and it is that which sometimes produces not merely a good result but remarkable recoveries. So many factors are taken into account that it cannot be taught - it has to be lived through. That is why in all my Centers and consulting rooms in Ukraine and elsewhere micropolarization is given ACCORDING TO MY protocols - I am responsible for every child who comes to me, and I write the scheme by hand only for that child. Yes, the protocols get copied, people try to use one of mine on ten children, but but a result comes only in the child the protocol was written for.

A special word to the centersthat carry out micropolarization: by writing the phrase "individual protocol" and adopting my idea of oxygen therapy, and by persuading families to take several incompatible kinds of stimulation at once, you are not restoring children but often making them worse - and no, you do not see it; afterwards they come to me.

The individual protocol

  This is the scheme of stimulation: which points the electrodes will be placed on, at what intensity, for how long, and how often the visits will be - we do NOT give micropolarization every day, that is very harmful. The protocol takes into account:
     1)   the specific impairments in the child - only a speech pathologist can see them; neurologists do not see or know them, which is why a neurologist’s appointment gives no information about WHAT has to be restored
     2)   the particular features of the child’s nervous system
     3)   the EEG
     4)   medication - what the child is taking at the moment
     5)   right- or left-handedness - a point that often drops out of the assessment altogether
     6)   the family’s circumstances - how the parents can travel to the sessions, or how long they can stay in the city where the treatment is given. These factors often have to be taken into account too, so that the parents’ life stays as comfortable as possible

OUR KNOW-HOW in applying the method

  Of course we have our own "secrets" in applying the method. For example, we are the only ones in Ukraine who do VERTEBRAL MICROPOLARIZATION (on the back, to improve fine and gross motor skills and walking). Reinforcing micropolarization with oxygen therapy is also our own know-how, which makes it possible to give up chemical methods in favour of natural stimulation with no side effects. The scheme for the vertebral stimulation and for the use of oxygen therapy is also written INDIVIDUALLY. That is why we can take the youngest children for the procedure, even from birth, if a lag in development can already be seen. Families come to us not only from every city in Ukraine but from abroad as well.

Who needs micropolarization?

The method has a wide field of use because it can act selectively on the brain. Our center concentrates on children with developmental delays, so the information below concerns them first of all. Stimulation can be applied both to the head (the brain) and to the back (the spinal cord), to restore motor function. This matters especially for children with epilepsy or a poor EEG, who also need to recover.

 Micropolarization corrects:

• Motor impairment - gross and fine motor skills, in particular in children with cerebral palsy. The method restores the skills of sitting, grasping and walking as fully as possible.
• Lag in intellectual development, developmental and psycho-speech delay - regardless of what caused the impairment.
• Speech development disorders in children (motor and partly sensory alalia, any speech disorder) - speech delay.
• Behaviour disorders (hyperactivity, attention deficit, impulsivity and so on).
• Head injuries.
• The consequences of stroke - impairment of speech, movement and intellectual function.
• Vascular diseases of the brain and their consequences (vegetative state, hemiparesis, paraparesis, ataxia, aphasia, alalia and others).
• The consequences of neuroinfections of the brain.
• Impairment of vision (amblyopia, nystagmus, squint).
• Impairment of hearing (sensorineural hearing loss).
• In some cases epileptic syndrome and epilepsy, significantly reducing the number of seizures

What are the results?

• Motor function recovers substantially - children begin to roll over, sit, stand, walk, run, and use their hands to look after themselves (hold a spoon, drink from a cup, dress and undress, draw, write and so on).
• The movements involved in eating recover - chewing, moving food around the mouth with the tongue, swallowing.
• The ability to speak and to articulate words comes back.
• Speech improves and sometimes recovers completely, the active vocabulary widens, and children begin to speak in whole phrases or sentences.
• All the cognitive functions of the brain improve: attention, memory, thinking, motor skills.
• Curiosity improves, and so does active attention, which makes it possible for severely affected children to work with teachers.
• Hyperactivity decreases, along with impulsivity and aggression, and attention improves.
• In children abstract thinking starts to work (many children with impairments have no access to it), and the child visibly becomes brighter. That will let them attend an ordinary school in future.

How does a micropolarization session go?

For the micropolarization procedure we use, depending on the indications, either the REAMED-Polaris device, which has been through many years of testing and was developed by the Institute of Medical Rehabilitation "Vozvrashchenie", or the Magnon-SLIP made by a leading manufacturer of medical equipment. We categorically do not use the Ukrainian "Kvadrat U" device in our Center, as we consider it UNSAFE for micropolarization. Yes, it costs four times less, but: it runs from the mains (which on its own is grounds for banning its use with children), it does not deliver the required output current, which is critical when working with small children (in practice it simply gives a shock), and it is single-channel, so it cannot be used to stimulate both hemispheres at once. And two-channel schemes are the basis of micropolarization sessions, especially in children on the autism spectrum.

The procedure lasts 30-40 minutes. The children sit and watch cartoons, play, or do puzzles; there are no unpleasant sensations at all. If the micropolarization is applied to the back, the children usually lie on a couch or sit in comfortable chairs.

When will there be a result?

The maximum effect is seen 2.5-3.5 months after the end of the course, by which time the damaged nervous tissue has recovered and new tissue has grown. The course can be repeated - again on a new individual protocol - after 3-6 months, because the after-effect lasts a long time.

The effectiveness of the method

An EEG is needed in order to write an individual protocol. But in a third of children with developmental delays the EEG is practically perfect. So what is there to stimulate? As a speech pathologist I also see hidden disturbances of mental development, which are not visible on an EEG and which other neurologists often miss on examination (this applies especially, as mothers say themselves, to speech disorders). That is why the effectiveness of micropolarization with us is close to 100%. And using our other methods (for example, the various programs of high-frequency correction , or the right micronutrient support for the brain) makes it possible to restore a child as fully as possible in the shortest time.

Important. Severe sensory alalia is NOT RESTORED by micropolarization. Mothers, do not waste time. First must come high-frequency therapy, or at least ordinary Tomatis, to restore Wernicke's area (the area of phonemic hearing), and only then micropolarization.

A consultation before the procedure is compulsory: at it we draw up an overall plan for restoring the child or adult, and gather the information needed to write the individual protocol of stimulation. Alongside the centers in Kyiv and Lvivwe maintain a network of centers in Odesa, Kharkiv, Dnipro, Lutsk and other cities.
